Davao bet rips foe, advances in JVC badminton By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan
HOMETOWN bet Ivan Bryx Mondejar and two Butuan City shuttlers entered the next round after beating separate foes in the opener of the JVC Badminton Regional Leg-Davao Championships at the Wheels N' More courts Tuesday.
Mondejar, a mainstay of Wheels 'N More, crushed Joel Peter Apostol, 21-6, 21-2, in the boys 16-under singles event.
Butuan Badminton Club's Miko Cossido and Josiah Babad also racked up wins in the opening of the four-day competition that offers cash prizes, medals, JVC items and gift packs to the winners.
Cossido overwhelmed Ferdinand Juyo, 21-7, 21-10, while Babad pulled off a 21-12, 12-10 victory over Marcel Salmorin.
Other first round winners were Marc Francis Carracedo who ousted Pius Sto. Domingo of Smash N' Drop, 21-13, 21-17, Alvin Jay Paulina over Nicolai Mark Ysmael, 21-17, 21-11, Miguel Prieto over Ralph John Alegador over 21-12, 21-15 and Reylan Ocera of Shuttle Zone over Junio Panes, 21-5, 21-9. Jeremy Ronald Lim breezed to an easy win against Racol Tolimao via walkover.
Matches in juniors 16-under mixed doubles were still ongoing as of posting.
The meet also features the elite men's and ladies singles, doubles and mixed doubles; juniors 16-under girls singles and doubles and boys doubles; and inter-collegiate men's and ladies events.
A total cash prize of P138,000 is up for grabs in the regional tournament.
JVC president and chief executive officer Hideyuki Takato, marketing manager Rachel Bacsal, general manager Kazue Salud, Wheels N' More owner Wesley Bangayan, Councilor Susabel Reta and Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte's executive assistant, and city sports coordinator Christopher "Bong" Go were the guests during the opening rites.
