Gov't agency to launch job creation program
A NEW job creation program will be launched all over the country on Monday.
Public Works Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane Jr. said the program, dubbed as Roadside Maintenance Job Creation, will assure more jobs for the marginalized sector of the society.
Focus of the program includes jobless, out-of-school youths, and other marginalized barangay residents whose ages are 18 to 50 years old who are still capable to land a job.
To realize her 10-point agenda, particularly on job generation, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo ordered the release of allocations from the Motor Vehicles Users Charge to fund wages of thousands of marginalized barangay laborers who will be hired to ensure proper year-round and all-weather maintenance of roadsides along national roads all over the country.
Each laborer will be responsible for the upkeeping of about 3.5 kilometers of roadside and carriageway along national roads.
Specifically, the job consists of patching and sealing of bituminous and concrete pavements, manual repair and patching of unpaved shoulders, ditch and culverts line cleaning, and vegetation control within the roads right-of-way, among others.
What used to be the sole responsibility of DPWH will now be shared by other National Government agencies like the Department of Social Welfare and Development, the Philippine National Police, Department of Interior and Local Government and the Philippine Information Agency along with local government units particularly on the barangay level.
