Gonzalez captures 4 golds in Palarong Pambansa
By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan

NOT even Typhoon Caloy could stop Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) tanker Jose Joaquin "Joboy" Gonzalez from collecting his third and fourth gold medals in the final two days of the 2006 Palarong Pambansa swimming competition at the Metro Naga Sports Complex, Picol, Naga City.

Gonzalez plunged for the gold in the elementary boys 100-meter butterfly after clocking one minute and 05.62 seconds Thursday afternoon.

He then struck for another gold in the 200-meter individual medley (IM) Friday morning despite strong winds and heavy rains brought about by the typhoon.

His proud mother Deedee said, "Malakas ang hangin at ulan dito during the competition. Hindi na nga nag time trials eh dahil sa bagyo. All the events were already timed finals in the morning."

Gonzalez's twin feat came on the heels of his gold performances in elementary boys 100-meter backstroke and 50m butterfly events Tuesday.

But he settled for silver in 50-meter backstroke after a neck-to-neck encounter with gold winner Joshua Acain of Region 10. He also powered the Davraa 4X100 freestyle relay team to a bronze finish with the help of Bajjio Malabanan, Ronie Barani and Brix Morados.

The gold still evaded Dabawenya Celina Gonzalez at the close of the swimfest after salvaging a silver in elementary girls 100m butterfly. She took a total of three silvers in the meet, a far cry from her three gold wins in the Iloilo Palaro last year.

Davao's Alyanna Malabanan copped the bronze in secondary girls 200m backstroke. She also led the Davraa 4X50 freestyle relay team of Erika Nazareno, Analie Rodriguez and Gianina Gonzalez to a bronze.

Alyanna earlier won the silver in 100-meter backstroke.
