Resettlement lot purchase still in council's hand: official

THE decision of the Executive Department whether to purchase the relocation site at Sitio Balite, Buhangin will be anchored on the recommendation of the City Council, said City Administrator Wendel E. Avisado Monday.

During last Tuesday's regular session, the City Council decided to reconsider its decision allowing Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte to buy the 30,000-square meter lot relocation area due to controversy surrounding its ownership and its unsuitable contour.

The relocation area is intended for the Back of Regional Resettlement Association (Barresa) settlers whose houses are to be demolished this May 17.

Since the matter has been referred back to the City Council housing committee for further study and scrutiny, Avisado said, they would have to wait for the result of the study.

"We don't have any basis on whether to continue with the transaction except the City Council's recommendation," Avisado said Monday.

Avisado said the recommendation to purchase the site should first come from the City Council with affirmation from the City Legal Office, city administrator, and finally decided by the city mayor.

Duterte earlier said he would buy the site if the city could not find any other sites for the relocation of Barresa settlers granting that there are no legal impediments.

Meanwhile, Councilor Danilo C. Dayanghirang said the City Council in Tuesday's regular session will discuss the matter, whether it should give legislative authority to the mayor or not for the purchase of the lot.

Dayanghirang said they have invited Dataya and City Legal Officer Melchor V. Quitain to join the session and shed light on the matter.

"I hope the appearance of some personalities will satisfy the members of the City Council," Dayanghirang said in a separate interview. (BRQ)
