Waste segregation has to be done
MAKING Dabawenyos segregate their wastes into biodegradable, non-biodegradable, and recyclable trash before chucking them out of their houses for the garbage collectors to gather will be a very difficult job, but it is a job that simply has to be done, City Administrator Wendel E. Avisado said Monday.
The city will be implementing the "no segregation, no collection policy" starting May 29.
The city environment and natural resources office announced this new policy last week as City Hall prepares to embark full-blast on its solid waste management program.
"It will be very difficult to make people follow this, but if we don't start it now then when will we?" Avisado said.
Avisado earlier signed a memorandum ordering segregation of wastes at the City Hall offices.
He said the policy when implemented in the entire city may meet a lot of resistance from the public similar to the Anti-smoking Ordinance when newly implemented.
"It takes time, patience and cooperation to follow it. That memorandum was intended to show people that government people themselves are doing this," Avisado said.
He said the City Government by showing the way will not have a difficulty in convincing the public to also follow and implement among themselves the segregation of wastes, including its reduction. (BRQ)
