Councilors slam porno tabloid

TWO lady councilors took turns Tuesday to lambaste a Visayan tabloid circulating in the city that carries pornographic sex stories, calling for its ban.

City Councilor Pilar C. Braga said she received a letter from the Gagmayng Kristohanong Katilingban, which called her attention, to the tabloid "Brigada".

Braga said Brigada, a tabloid published in General Santos but also circulated in Davao City, is pornographic as it regularly features in its pages column entitled "Sexperience."

Braga said she read the column for May 13, 2006 issue and found the article very vulgar.

The story on that issue, she said, was about a man forcing a girl to have oral sex.

"It is supposed to be a true confessions story and the language used leaves nothing to the imagination of the reader," Braga said in her privileged speech during the council session Tuesday.

Braga said the writer's name of the column, Disiedido Muahabal, is obviously just a pen name, which literally means in the Cebuano dialect "determined to the sex act."

"Brigada is simply pornographic and we should be wary of newspaper tabloids like it being circulated in our city. The intention is immoral and the language used is objectionable. Young readers who get their hands on this tabloid may get the wrong idea," she said.

Councilor Nenita R. Orcullo also said pornographic materials such as the Brigada hinders the development of women in the society.

Braga said she would pass a resolution requesting City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte to look into the matter and make the appropriate actions regarding the "Sexperience" column of the tabloid.

Orcullo, for her part, said she would pass a resolution requesting the Philippine National Police to look into the proliferation of pornographic materials in the city.

Braga said the City Government is duty bound to stop the circulation and distribution of the tabloid in the city, as it is against decency and moral standard. (BRQ)
