Davao netters advance

DAVAO City netters El Santo Santos and Juan Paolo Cansino remained in contention for the crown after ousting foes in the 2006 Head Penn Junior Tennis Tournament at the Baguio Tennis Club Athletic Bowl Burnham Park, Baguio City Tuesday.

The top-seeded Santos, a mainstay of the Rizal Memorial Colleges (RMC), spanked Von Anthony Dellaban, 6-2, 6-2, in the boys 16-under quarterfinals.

Third-seed Kyle Cordero of Manila routed Dan So Chan of Roxas City, 6-1, 6-0, while No. 4 Princeton Gerapusco of Cotabato City pulled off a 6-1, 6-1 demolition of Mark Lee Francisco and No. 2 Raymund Padigos of Manila crushed Gerard Rosario, 6-0, 6-1.

Santos also advanced in 18-under by whipping Lloyd Mendoza, 6-2, 6-2, while second-seed Raymond Padigos survived a 2-6, 6-3, 10-4 victory over Dellaban.

Baguio's Andrew TAngalin overcame Greg Atos, 6-1, 7-5 even as Jerry Pasagoy overwhelmed Mark Montenegro, 6-3, 6-2.

No. 1 Cansino, on his part, demolished Argil Lance Canizares, 6-2, 6-2 in boys 12-under semifinals to arrange a titular showdown against No. 2 Arjohn dela Cruz of Manila who won past Kurt Gerapusco, 6-4, 7-5.

Cansino also won his boys 14-under quarterfinals encounter against Aldrin Paraso of Baguio, 6-0, 6-1, alongside top-seed Cordero who dusted off Cebuano Paolo Cenabre, 6-1, 6-0.

Dela Cruz downed Robins Magno, 6-2, 6-1, while hometown bet Joselito Cortez scored a stunning 6-4, 6-2 upset over Princeton Gerapusco.

In the girls 16-under, Davao's Sandra Lagman, who swept two titles in Cebu, bested Celeste Rafael of Baguio City in a thrilling 6-1, 3-6, 10-8 collision.

Top-seed Macy Solon of Dumaguete thrashed Annalyn Noble, 6-0, 6-0 while Cindy Gerapusco lambasted Gale Limog, 6-0, 6-2, in the Philippine Tennis Association (Philta)-sanctioned tour. (MLSA)
