11-T overseas jobseekers in C. Mindanao register in 2005

KORONADAL CITY -- Some 11,981 job seekers in Central Mindanao have applied for overseas employment in 2005, according to the regional office of the Department of Labor and Employment (Dole).

Despite reports of maltreatment and untoward incidents experienced by some Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in foreign lands, the search for overseas jobs remains unabated.

Evelyn Libot, supervising employment officer of Dole Central Mindanao, said these jobseekers registered in the following venues: Dole -- 3,332; Job Fair -- 2,162 and provincial recruitment- 6,487.

Liezl International, a recruitment agency, which has a memorandum of agreement with Dole, was able to process 301 applications out of 1,646 job placements for Kuwait in December 2005.

In the first quarter of 2006, there were 5,632 who registered for overseas employment, the employment officer disclosed.

Jimmy Marquez, Dole Central Mindanao chief of operations, advised the public seeking overseas jobs to deal only with recruitment agencies that are registered with Dole.

"This is to avoid problems in the future where the OFWs have no guarantee of protection from an illegal recruitment agency," Marquez pointed out.
