New York too much for 'Big Brother'
By Nelson C. Bagaforo

GMA-7's supremacy in the primetime ratings is once again proven by the success of "I Luv New York" when it premiered on Monday.

This original teleserye, shot largely in "the city that never sleeps," easily defeated the competition in the ratings game in Mega Manila.

Based on overnight ratings released by AGB-Nielsen, "I Luv NY," which stars the country's most-loved pairs of Jolina Magdangal and Marvin Agustin and Jennylyn Mercado and Mark Herras, posted a high 38 percent viewership rating as against ABS-CBN's Pinoy Big Brother-Teen Edition's 24.3.

"I Luv NY" airs Monday to Friday, after the fantaserye Majika, on GMA-7's primetime block.

The same data released by AGB-Nielsen also showed ABS-CBN's Bituing Walang Ningning, which also premiered on Monday, was behind Extra Challenge, its rival program on GMA-7.

"Bituin," topbilled by Sarah Geronimo posted a viewership rating of 29.2 percent, 2.8 behind Extra Challenge's 32 percent.

It was expected that the two shows, "Bituing Walang Ningning" and "I Luv NY" will be pitted against each other. But not until Monday when ABS-CBN showed "Bituin" in an earlier timeslot, after its primetime newscast TV Patrol World, while GMA-7 placed "I Luv NY" after its top rating program Majika, topbilled by
Angel Locsin and Dennis Trillo.

GMA-7 senior vice president for entertainment Wilma Galvante said "I Luv NY" is a first on Philippine television, taking Filipino soaps to a higher level.

For the first time, she said, a romantic comedy soap was shot on location in a foreign land, against a backdrop of New York's landmarks that have been the favorite location of many Hollywood hits -- where the major characters will meet, encounter adventures and misadventures, and eventually fall in love.
