Dumaguete lass wins tennis title

MACY Solon of Dumaguete City proved too much for Davao City bet Sandra Lagman to capture the girls 16-under title in yesterday's finals of the 2006 Head Penn Junior Tennis Tournament at the Baguio Tennis Club Athletic Bowl, Burnham Park in Baguio City.

The top-seeded Solon, who idolizes Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova, was devastating against Lagman winning in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2.

Solon is still playing in the 18-under finals as of press time in a bid for a second title in the Baguio leg of the Philippine Tennis Association (Philta)-sanctioned netfest.

Manila netter Argil Lance Canizares carved out a 7-5, 5-7, 12-10 victory over Vince Mark Tabotabo of Cebu for the 10-under unisex plum.

The girls 12-under crown went to Monic Rafael, who shutout Annalyn Cortez, 6-0, 6-0, in their finals encounter.

Finals matches by Dabawenyos El Santo Santos and Juan Paolo Cansino in their respective categories were still being played.

Both players have been consistent in reaping top honors in the recent legs.

Head Penn items, trophies and medals are up for grabs in the tournament sponsored by Dynamic Sports Corporation.

The final leg is on May 21 to 26 in Metro Manila.

A similar tournament was held in Davao City, General Santos, Cagayan de Oro, Dumaguete City, Bacolod City, Iloilo City, Liloan, Cebu and Cebu City. (MLSA)
