Victims of Aids to be remembered

AN ALLIANCE of people's organizations with a vision to promote reproductive health is spearheading the 23rd International Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (Aids) Candlelight Memorial and Mobilization (IACMM) in the city.

The Alliance Against Aids in Mindanao (Alagad) has lined-up activities for the celebration of the 23rd IACMM including an information campaign and several holy mass. This year's theme is "Lighting the Path to a Brighter Future."

Michael Jesus A. Mahinay of Alagad Mindanao said the activity is intended to honor and remember 28 million people who died of Aids, 42 million people with HIV or Aids and to defend those who are still not infected with HIV or Aids.

"This is part of our information drive to let the people know about Aids and promote discussion and awareness about the disease," Mahinay said in vernacular during the I-speak press conference Thursday.

Mahinay said they are inviting the public to join the said event to show support to those with Aids as having the said disease is not easy.

The Candlelight has become a way of publicly mourning to loved ones whose lives were claimed by the said disease.

IWAG Dabaw executive director Rhoy Diaz said revealing oneself in the society as someone having the disease takes a lot of courage.

"Meron kasing discrimination and stigma. People tend to discriminate those with Aids, lalo na pag gay," said Diaz, also one of the guests during the press conference.

Since 1983, Aids has claimed 28 million lives and about 442 million today are living with HIV or Aids. (BRQ)
