Mayor's Cup swimfest fires off By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan
HOST Coastland Davao Swim Team (CDST) will open its title defense as the 2006 Davao Mayor's Cup Age-Group Swimming Meet plunges into action today at the Ladislawa Country Club Friday.
CDST coach Rose Rodriguez said said they will field 45 swimmers in all events. A total of 152 events will be competed in the three-day swimfest.
Rodriguez, who guested in Thursday's Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn, said CDST will be powered by Palarong Pambansa medalists headed by boys elementary most outstanding athlete Jose Joaquin Gonzalez.
Gonzalez had four gold medals, two silvers and one bronze to his credit in the just-concluded national school-based sportsfest for elementary and high school athletes.
CDST, according to Rodriguez, also expects Palaro triple silver medalist Celina Gonzalez, silver and bronze medalist Alyanna Malabanan, bronze medallist Gianina Gonzalez and silver and bronze winner Bajjio Malabanan and other mainstays to carry the team.
"We really can't predict the golds we will win this year but we will try to defend the championship," Rodriguez said.
She added some 260 participants from Zamboanga City, Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, General Santos, Cotabato, Panabo, Tangub, Ozamis and other Mindanao teams will be out to challenge CDST's title-retention bid.
Philippine Amateur Swimming Association (Pasa) president Mark Joseph is the guest speaker during the opening rites of the meet that stakes medals to the winners.
Davao City Swimming Association (DCSA) president Deedee Gonzalez, also the CDST secretary, is spearheading the conduct of the tournament. She will be celebrating her birthday today.
The Davao Mayor's Cup is part of the regional leg series of swimming competitions.
