Kiwanis Club adopts barangay in Igacos
THE Kiwanis Club of Durian Davao, Key No. 17224, Division 7, Philippine South District, Kiwanis International served the people of Barangay Tagbaobo in Kaputian, Samal, Igacos.
Club charter president Dominador "Doming" Y. Lanoy, disclosed that due to Kiwanis concerns in serving the children of the world caused them to adopt the barangay in a bid to help the needy and provide them with medical assistance.
Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time. Kiwanis International builds bridges of better understanding through service to children and communities worldwide.
The club has recently launched formally its project dubbed "Kiwanis 17224 Fiery Summer 4 in 1 '06. In adopting the said barangay of Kaputian, Samal, Kiwanis Club of Durian Davao has voluntarily conducted four projects in one community with the assistance of the barangay officials, barangay health workers, barangay nutrition scholars and volunteer doctor-friends of the club.
The projects are: 1. medical assistance; medical check-ups (vital signs), distribution of vitamins to children and medicines for the adults; 2. "operation tuli"; dental clinic; 3. Read Around the World Program; and 4. Daily Nutrition Feeding Program. The "Read Around the World Program" is a Kiwanis worldwide annual activity to help the children learn to read and orient the parents the importance of reading educational materials such as quality books.
In this project the Club was partnered by the Asia Foundation of Washington DC, USA.
The "Daily Nutrition Feeding Program" has been conceived in the heart of the members of the Club to help the malnourished children aging 0-6 to be given proper nutrition. In this project, Kiwanis Club of Durian Davao made partnership with the barangay officals, health workers and nutrition scholars for its implementation.
The barangay council team does the daily feeding to 30 children identified as malnourished and Kiwanis visits the community twice a month for evaluation purposes and progressive analysis. Kiwanis is hopeful that after the 90-day period of the project the 30 children are freed from malnourishment.
Kiwanis Club of Durian Davao is sponsored by the Kiwanis Clubs of Verdugo Hills, Glendale; and Fil-Am Glendale, CA, USA. In response of the community results, the club has installed a global signage entering the said barangay and a signal that they have known the global prestigious organization.
Also, the club named immediate past Lieutenant Governor Martin M. Lopez Jr. and Philippine South District Governor Emeritus Emilio M. Piansay as counselors. Charter Club President Doming Lanoy disclosed that wherever there's a need, Kiwanis will be there as they have for 91 years, making a difference for children and for their communities.
