Porno tabloid says 'sorry' to city mayor
By Barbara Carla R. Quiero

THE publisher of a Visayan tabloid, which carries pornographic sex stories, has apologized to City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte.

"We are humbly asking an apology. We have also changed the format of the column as well as the pen name of the writer," Brigada News publisher Elmer C. Catalpos said in a letter to the mayor dated May 22.

Brigada is a tabloid emanating from General Santos City and circulating in this city.

Catalpos said the tabloid respects and supports the good programs of the city.

He said the Davao City news bureau of the Brigada will always coordinate with the mayor's office for any development news in the city.

The apology was issued after city councilors Pilar C. Braga and Nenita R. Orcullo lambasted Brigada saying that the tabloid has as its main feature a column entitled "Sexperience" written by somebody named Disiedido Muahabal.

Gagmayng Kristohanong Katilingban called the attention of Braga on the tabloid Brigada.

Braga after reading one of the issues of the tabloid said she found the article vulgar. Both lady councilors Braga and Orcullo has then called for its ban.

"It's well and good that they apologized and admitted their mistake," Braga said Tuesday.

She added, "But that remains to be seen. We will see their coming issues if they will still use lewd words."

Braga said the City Council will continue to monitor the tabloid to make sure it has changed its format as promised in the publisher's letter.

The city has made its mark in being strict against smut and other activities that degrade women.

Several years ago when Bandera was still publishing lurid sex stories, the city imposed a ban and seized the copies as they arrived at the airport.

Similar sex-oriented tabloids common in Metro Manila also failed to make headway in this city.
