Environment office imposes 'no entry' policy in Diwalwal tunnel

THE Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) 11 issued a "no entry" policy at the Sunshine Tunnel of the JB Management and Mining Corporation.

Despite the stoppage order issued in November last year, the mining corporation continued its operation under the guise of a retrieval operation for the five remaining bodies of miners believed trapped inside.

Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Director Edilberto Arreza directed the Philippine National Police and the Army's 28th Infantry Battalion stationed in Diwalwal to strictly enforce the "no entry" policy.

It was learned that during an ocular inspection by an MGB 11 team in Diwalwal last March they monitored "incidental gold ore production" at the said tunnel.

The management claimed their operation was aimed at retrieving the bodies of the miners believed trapped inside and that the recovered gold ore were just incidental.

The regional environment office, however, is not buying this as they have already sought guidance from the Office of DENR Secretary on how to address the situation.

DENR 11 director Ricardo Calderon said a policy group under the DENR secretary is now reviewing the case. (BOT)
