Volleyball Cup underway
THRILLING action awaits spectators as the Inter-Barangay Volleyball Cup opens at 8 a.m. Friday at the Rizal Park.
Davao City Councilor Angela Librado, who is sponsoring the two-day competition together with the City Mayor's Office, said the event will feature 18 to 35 years old women's volleyball teams from the barangays of first district.
"There are 54 barangays in the first district. We hope most, if not all, barangays will field their teams in the tournament," she said during the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn Thursday.
Librado said a player must not be a member of a varsity team for the past two years to be eligible to play.
"This rule would even out the level of competition for all teams entered," Librado said.
Prizes, according to her, will be things that the players can use for their schooling or for their daily necessities.
"The City Mayor is encouraging us to give away prizes in kind, some things that the participants will need the most, instead of cash," she added.
The volleyfest is part of the ongoing program being undertaken by Librado's office and Bayan Muna for the youth.
Librado said they are also conducting cultural training for the youth including seminars on reproductive health.
"The sports event is just part of the whole package we have lined up for our youth," she said. The tournament is sanctioned by the Philippine Volleyball Federation (PVF) under regional director Daks Yambao. (MLSA)
