'Lane grabbing' to ease traffic during rush hours
By Ben O. Tesiorna

THE Traffic Management Center (TMC) has implemented starting Monday the "lane-grabbing scheme" to ease traffic congestion brought about by the opening of classes.

TMC chief Celso Gempesaw said they implemented the scheme in areas identified to be congested during rush hours, like MacArthur Highway and JP Laurel Avenue.

"Lane grabbing" will however be only good during the rush hours. In the said scheme, allocating one lane from the opposite side will increase traffic in the lanes going to the downtown area.

This way, the heavily congested lane will encroach on the opposite lane that is not normally congested during the rush hours.

Gempesaw said they implemented the scheme after Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte suggested it in his weekly television program Sunday.

Heavy traffic is expected during the opening of classes especially in the Ateneo Matina campus area.

Aside from the lane-grabbing scheme, TMC also deployed traffic enforcers near schools to ensure the smooth flow of vehicles.
