Dimakiling ends stint with 6 wins By Charles Raymond A. Maxey
OLIVER Dimakiling ended his first campaign in the World Chess Olympiad with a defeat, but judging from his over-all performance it was already a big achievement for the Davao City woodpusher.
The 26-year-old Dimakiling, who hails from Barangay Sasa, finished with six points in nine matches to end up as the second best performer among Filipino players that saw action in Turin, Italy.
Rogelio Antonio Jr. was the best Filipino performer with seven points out of 11 games, while Grandmasters Mark Paragua and Eugene Torre had 4.5 points each.
The Filipinos ended their campaign on a sour note, bowing to Brazil to finish the 13-round tournament with 28.5 points, or good for 44th place.
Paragua, Torre, and Antonio drew their final round assignments, while Dimakiling lost to IM Alexabder Hilario Fier on board four.
Thus, the Philippines men's team failed to improve on their 19th place finish in Spain two years ago.
Dimakiling, who started playing chess at the age of five, got off to a sensational start as he won four of his first five matches. He then got stalled by going 2-for-4 in from there.
Still, it was a decent showing by the Davao chesser in an international event of this magnitude.
The biggest for the country came from the distaff side when the Filipinas finished with 22 points for 26th place.
