68 Moro rebels surrender in Cotabato

SIXTY-eight Moro rebels returned to the folds of the law Monday and gave up their firearms to authorities.

In a simple ceremony last June 5 at the headquarters of the Army's 602nd Brigade in Carmen, North Cotabato, Colonel Ruperto Pabustan presented to the public two different rebel groups who decided to give up fighting in the mountains.

The groups were composed of 44 Moro National Liberation Front-Misuari Breakaway Group headed by Lugem Daud alias Sadam operating in Pikit area and 24 Moro Islamic Liberation Front fighters under 32nd Unified Command, National Guard Division headed by Commander Gerry Cons Panaggulon operating in M'Lang, North Cotabato.

The rebels voluntarily surrendered to the authorities bringing along with them 35 different high-powered firearms.

Commanding General of 6th Infantry (Kampilan) Division Major General Rodolfo Obaniana officiated the surrenderees' oath of allegiance to the Constitution and to the Philippine government.

The military as well as the local government unit in the area committed to welcome the rebels who submit themselves to become once again "freemen."

The mass surrender was due to the efforts of Lieutenant Colonel John Oswald Bucu of the Army's 40th Infantry Battalion and Mayor Sumulong Sultan of Pikit and barangay captain Torno of Tinutukan.

The rebel returnees will be utilized in safeguarding the peace and order in their respective areas, as they will be appointed civilian volunteers under the supervision of their local chief executives. (BOT)
