Agrarian dep't is doing well, says regional chief
THE Department of Land Reform (DLR, formerly Department of Agrarian Reform) has been doing its best to distribute land to landless farmers in the region, DLR Regional Director Rodolfo T. Inson said.
Inson issued the statement when asked to comment on claims of some peasant farmer groups that the agency lacked powers in implementing the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (Carp), the reason why land is not properly distributed to Carp beneficiaries.
"We have implemented 95 percent of accomplishment and the balance is only five percent," Inson said during the press conference at the PIA Wednesday.
In the whole region, Inson said, a total of 3.7 million hectares were already distributed and 1.2 million hectares more are to be distributed to agrarian reform beneficiaries in the first quarter.
In Davao City alone, from January to May 30, a total of 108 hectares were distributed to 133 farmer beneficiaries.
As of May 31, the office has already distributed about 17,212 hectares benefiting 13,784 agrarian reform beneficiaries.
DLR has targeted 1,200 hectares of land to be distributed for 848 farmer beneficiaries in Davao del Norte. However, it has only distributed 631 hectares but benefited 852 farmers or a 100 percent accomplishment.
"In terms of supporting services, we are changing our gears from land tenure to support services," Inson said.
Inson said DLR's problem is its limited budget to pay landowners before it can acquire lands to be distributed to peasant farmers.
He added that a part of the Marcos ill-gotten wealth has been allocated for DLR's acquisition of land. (BRQ)
