Trade dep't warns public vs fake school supplies

THE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Southern Mindanao warns the public to be careful in buying school supplies since various counterfeit products are being sold in the local market today.

Among the major school products that are pirated are Mongol pencil, Lotus ball pen, and Touch and Go liquid eraser.

The head office of DTI sent a list to its regional offices as to how one can determine the genuineness of the products.

For Mongol pencil, it must smell like cedar or tea; yellow paint is vibrant and glossy; ferrules (the top-most area where the eraser is being placed) is gold in color; lead does not easily break; and it has a barcode written on the side.

For Lotus ball pen, the pocket clip is not so wide; cap is rounded; the name Lotus is vibrant silver in color; stamp leaf printing and end plug holes are deep; date and year of manufacturing are indicated on the body of the product; and high quality of ink.

For Touch and Go liquid eraser, the color of text written on the body of the product is bright red; hologram pattern can't be read easily; it doesn't smell like ammonia; brush is straightened and not curled; and logo of the product is written on the bottom of the bottle.

DTI regional director for Southern Mindanao Merly M. Cruz said consumers should examine carefully the products that they are buying for them to enjoy the best value for their money.

"Every consumer deserves quality products. And that's the mandate of DTI, to protect the rights of consumers," she said.

Cruz added that if consumers have some inquiries or complaints, they can contact DTI 11 at (082) 224-0511.
