Ledesma: To be or not to be By Jun Ledesma Sunbursts
THE anti-Cha-cha cabal looks pathetic. I admire but then pity former vice president Teofisto Guingona Jr. for getting involved with a group whose faces and past are identified with incompetence and mediocrity.
I do not mind Guingona's personal stand against Charter change, but seen in the company of characters who have no better agenda than their own personal motives I cannot help but question his sense of judgment.
What I mean is that most of them are failed officials from previous administrations and I cannot just take the temerity of these pretenders to public service to preach about alternatives.
The more we see them the more the argument for Charter change becomes convincing. On the other hand, it would have been better for Guingona to speak for himself rather than associate with people whose credentials argue against their credibility.
By their own admission, they are not against Cha-cha. It is just that they are against amending or revising the Constitution during the term of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
After the second-rate performance of the Aquino administration the need to change the Cory constitution became imperative. Ramos who salvaged this country from the ruins of the dictatorship and the incompetence of Aquino wanted to revise the Charter.
However, his motive was suspect and the Church, still reeling from its delirious success of ousting Marcos, spoke against it and the plan to institute reforms by amending the constitution was defeated and shelved.
But then, the pedestrian feat of the bacchanalian regime of Estrada resurrected the proposition for Charter change. His ouster took precedent, however. And now that Arroyo is pushing the Cha-cha her motive is again questioned. Let's not forget that the centerpiece of the political campaign of Arroyo was to change the Cory Constitution, which had veritably become a deterrent to the country's bid to compete in the dynamic and global economic rivalry.
To question her motive is therefore misplaced. To delay the Cha-cha just because Arroyo is the head of state is puzzling. To hold it after the administration of Arroyo is like fooling oneself with the belief that her successor will allow it.
Given this predicament I hope that we forego with all those pretensions and ministrations and let Congress start with the debate. Let's listen to them argue and let's hope that the giant television networks, even if they are dye-in-the-wool anti-Arroyo, cover the event like they do with all the oust Arroyo activities in and out of the congressional hall.
FEEDBACK. City Councilor Dads Mahipus with wife Rose along with friends Al and Auring Dayot and DCWD workaholic Arnold Navales and spouse Evelyn took a break from their respective jobs last week to spend their weekend in Dakak Resort. It turned out that the three of them read the items I wrote.
Dads told me the other day that he never realized that the roads all the way from Davao City to Zamboanga del Norte are already well-paved. And yes, Al and Arnold agreed that Dakak is a paradise and an excellent tourist destination.
CHECK THIS. There's a school for pre and grade school students in Bajada, which can really do wonders for the education of your child. Exegesis School of Davao, they call it. The school is equipped with computers and speech laboratories, and at an early stage of child development, get them to learn finger math and theater arts. The value-formation centering on Truth, Character Building, Excellence and Religious Foundation is a primordial concern of the school. You can never go wrong. Their telephone number is 227-9235.
