Maxey: A plea for compassion By Ram Maxey Bar None
SOME 20 families whose houses are located on a piece of land adjacent to La Vista Monte Subdivision in Km. 8, Matina Pangi, this city, are hoping that the management of Santos Land Development Corporation (SLDC), owner of the subdivision, will finally consider their longtime request for a mere 20 meters by 3 meters road-right-of-way on a portion of the subdivision.
The proposed access road consisting only of more or less 60 sq. meters certainly will not inconvenience the owners of the huge subdivision to any appreciable degree, but to the residents who will benefit from it, such an access road would be like manna from heaven for it will connect them to the world outside -- workplaces, markets, schools, churches, beaches, malls, parks, etc.
As long ago as the year 2001, the Barangay Council of Matina Pangi passed Barangay Resolution No. 30, Series of 2001, requesting SLDC management to grant the residents such a road-right-of-way. Lately, City Administrator Wendel E. Avisado took up the cudgels for the petitioners when he sent a letter to SLDC management dated May 2, 2006 reiterating their previous request. This time there is a sense of urgency on the part of the residents concerned after learning that SLDC is constructing a fence around its property that may eventually rule out the possibility of a road-right-of-way for the beleaguered residents.
But all is not yet lost for their cause. As of this writing the SLDC has not yet fenced off the portion in question. There is still hope that the concerned residents' request for a road-right-of-way will be granted, in which case it will be a case of "manna from heaven" through the good graces of the Santos Land Development Corporation.
"Hope springs eternal in the human breast," as the old saying goes. The concerned residents pray that SLDC, like all others engaged in business, is aware of its social responsibilities as a member of society. Granting this particular small road-right-of-way for humanitarian reasons would be a confirmation of such awareness.
