Military, police on red alert due to Luzon bombings
By Ben O. Tesiorna

SOUTHERN Mindanao has been placed on a heightened alert status after a series of bomb explosions hit Metro Manila and Luzon the past days.

Police Regional Office Director for Southern Mindanao Ricardo Quinto placed a red alert level all over the region.

The military is also on a heightened alert for the same reason.

The latest bomb explosion to hit Metro Manila was Tuesday morning inside the headquarters of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) at Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig.

A group calling itself "Taong Bayan at Kawal" owned up to the bombing.

The group earlier claimed responsibility for the bombings at Yuchengco-owned Grepalife building in Makati last week and two police precincts in Manila and Quezon City over the weekend.

Initial reports showed a bomb exploded just beside a Special Weapons and Tactics van, which was parked near NCRPO's Regional Special Action unit office at 4:40 a.m.

The explosion gouged a hole on the right side of the vehicle.

There were no reported casualties in the incident.

Investigations are underway to determine how the bomber managed to sneak inside the camp and plant the bomb.

Reports said the explosion was created by a pillbox.

In a statement, the group said the series of bombing in Metro Manila were carefully planned to spare civilians from being hurt.
