Sun.Star Davao named RP's regional newspaper of year
THE Rotary Club of Manila, the country's oldest Rotary Club, has chosen Sun.Star Davao as the Regional Newspaper of the Year for its 2005 Annual Journalism Award.
The award was received by Sun.Star Davao publisher Antonio M. Ajero and editor-in-chief Stella A. Estremera during the ceremonies held at the Shangri-La Hotel in Makati Thursday.
This is the first time a Mindanao newspaper has won the award. The first Mindanao writer to be named Journalist of the Year from the same award-giving body is also a Sun.Star Davao writer -- Henrylito D. Tacio, who got that distinction in 1999.
Last year's Regional Newspaper of the Year was Sun.Star Cebu.
The Rotary Club of Manila organized the RCM Journalism Awards in 1966 to honor the outstanding contributions of individuals in print, television, and radio.
It aims to encourage excellence in Philippine journalism by giving recognition to outstanding journalists and media institutions.
The awards, was stopped in 1972 following the proclamation of Martial Law. It was revived in 1986 and has since "carried on the Club's commitment to encourage the proper development of Philippine Journalism and give recognition to the excellence of Filipino journalists and their works". (SAE)
