Councilor wants sex education in high school curriculum
DAVAO City Councilor Mabel Sunga-Acosta sees the need to include sex education in the curriculum of public high schools.
Acosta said sex education will help students understand their bodies better before they could even experiment with it.
"It will help them to be prepared so they will have an informed decision," Acosta said Tuesday.
According to her, sex education will correct all sex myths among the teens.
With it, she said, teachers play an important role in teaching the subject.
She said the Department of Education should also encourage students who become pregnant to continue their studies.
"A social stigma goes with it unlike the guys they can still go on with their regular activities," she added.
Councilor Danilo C. Dayanghirang also said it is high time to teach the subject in school.
"With the trend now, you will see that there is indeed a need to educate them," Dayanghirang said in a phone interview Wednesday.
He, however, said the teachers should handle the subject carefully as it is a very sensitive matter or else the students will be corrupted.
Councilor Pilar C. Braga also said competent teachers, who underwent seminars and workshops in relation to the subject will be more effective in teaching the students. (BRQ)
