Idle lands in Koronadal to be planted with 'tuba-tuba'
KORONADAL CITY -- In addition to the major local initiative programs of Koronadal City, Mayor Fernando Q. Miguel made his pronouncement on the new agri-program on tuba-tuba/kasla plantation during the department heads meeting on July 3 at the City Mayor's Office.
He directed City Agriculturist Emelita Miguel to conduct an inventory of all idle agricultural lands of the city and have a report of the possible areas suited for tuba-tuba plantation. Priority areas for tuba-tuba plantation are the marginal and hilly lands.
Tuba-tuba is reported to be a good alternative source for crude oil. It can also be a renewable source of bio-diesel and can be used in soap making, lubricants and candles.
Its protein content may be used as raw material for plastic and synthetic fiber.
It also has high medical value. Its oil cake is also rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium and can be used as an organic fertilizer.
Studies show that propagating the tuba-tuba offers a good income opportunity to marginalized farmers.
Aside form being easy to propagate, the plant grows almost everywhere -- in sandy and saline soils and even in crevices.
Miguel said: "Let us make use of the idle agricultural lands and transform these to become productive land. I am in a hurry to develop Koronadal. I believe that one of the secrets of development is agriculture."
