Move decisively v. tax evaders: finance chief
FINANCE Secretary Margarito Teves told ranking revenue collection officials to "act decisively" on their Run After Tax Evaders (Rate) campaign.
"Following on the heels of this intensive Rate drive, Bureau of Internal Revenue Mario Buñag told his men to move efficiently on tax collections and run after those found cheating on taxes," BIR Regional Director Marcelinda Omila Yap said.
"We have launched a more extensive campaign aimed at providing correct information on taxes and its related issues, which includes a sustained drive among students starting from the elementary up to collegiate level," she said.
Tax education campaign, she said, is now incorporated in education courses in coordination with Department of Education regional director Diamar Kadon to make the students aware of their responsibilities as future taxpayers.
Omila-Yap denied reports that BIR is hiding those found as tax evaders. She said the business community is "very cooperative and supportive in all our tax campaign which resulted to very high rate on efficient tax collections in our region."
"With the continued support of the business sector, while we achieved high collection targets in the region, it would be very unfair na bibigyan naming sila ng kasalanan while our taxpayers are cautious in paying correct taxes," she said.
In fact, BIR is expressing its gratitude to the business sector, because unlike in other regions in the country, region eleven taxpayers are well informed on their tax responsibilities and are doing their duties in tax payments, she said.
She also expressed her gratitude to Davao City revenue district officer Jose Eric Furia and the Tagum district office who are topnotch in the region's tax collections.
Tax campaign advocates who are consistently promoting tax education include: Susan Tusoy, assessment chief of the Revenue district office; Beverlie Montebon, Revenue District Officer; and Arlene Singco of BIR regional office.
"We have been hitting our target goal on tax collections which is an indication of a groundswell of patriotic fervor and unity," Omila-Yap stressed.
"I truly treasure the patriotism of those who, through all these years and with outmost diligence, have paid their share in taxes," she added.
