Maguindanao clashes finally end

THE fighting in the province of Maguindanao finally ended as the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) agreed to stop further escalation of atrocities in the area.

MILF spokesperson Eid Kabalu said the joint GRP-MILF Coordinating Committee on the Cessation of Hostilities have agreed to prevent the occurrence of armed encounters in the area, which started after the foiled assassination of Maguindanao Governor Andal Ampatuan last June 23.

"No more fighting, an agreement had already been in place to prevent the occurrence of fighting in the area. The GRP-MILF joint committee agreed to end the hostilities and normalize the situation in the affected areas of Maguindanao," Kabalu said.

Ampatuan's nephew and some friends died when a car bomb was detonated along the highway of Shariff Aguak while the governor's convoy was passing by the public market.

Ampatuan blamed two high-ranking MILF commanders for the latest assassination attempt against him.

The MILF however denied any involvement in the assassination plot.

Few days after the incident, militiamen identified with the Ampatuans attacked MILF positions in Shariff Aguak that started the two-weeklong armed encounters, which spread to five other nearby municipalities and displaced at least 16,000 innocent civilians. (BOT)
