Sabaldan: 5TH Shrine Hills Challenge hits a record number of participants By Romy Sabaldan Davao Beat
TOPPING the list of a record number of participants in the just concluded 5th Shrine Hills Challenge is the PNP Regional Training School XI of Mintal, Davao City with 100 runners.
This number comprises about 20 percent of the close to 500 registered participating runners in the 10-kilometer race and the 5K fun run according to Davao Sunday Runners Club, Inc. President Maning Jamiana Jr.
Jamiana was himself surprised by the big turnout of participants in the event that usually gets 180 to 200 runners in all its previous staging.
We would like to give credit to all the participating groups led by Colonel Jesus Baylosis Unabia, who fielded one hundred of his men and police trainees from the Regional Training School.
Davao Light and Power Company (DLPC) also leads the business groups in the annual event together with well-known fitness groups like Jimmy Javier's BeeFit Gym and the Holiday Spa.
Herbal Life also sent runners. So with the New City Commercial Center (NCCC), Bantay Bata, Bayantel, Equitable-PCI Bank and DATRUN.
Two regular participants in any running event the Task Force Davao and the Philippine National Police (PNP) also helped enliven the 10-kilometr race out and back starting from Jack's Ridge downhill and up circling the diversion road, Matina Pangi, Matina highway and GSIS routes.
Organizing the successful event was not that easy though because of the financial constraints of Davao's premier running club. In fact it was postponed for one week, according to Maning Jamiana.
However, the financial help of the Council of Presidents, members and friends of the Davao Sunday Runners Club, Inc. had made possible the fun run on its 5th year only last July 9.
Jamiana, through this column, would like to express deep gratitude to all the participants and supporters of the running event including Colonel Eduardo del Rosario of Task Force Davao for providing security to all 500 runners and officials of Sunday Runners.
The next beat: The 2006 Finishers Marathon in December.
