NATIONAL Master Jonathan Tan earned 6.5 points to clinch the title in the "A Chess Day With Oliver Dimakiling" blitz tournament at the Gaisano Mall of Davao over the weekend.
Tan pocketed a cash prize of P2,000 and a trophy for his feat in the one-day event organized by National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Region 11.
Tan bested 6.0 scorers US Master Peter Tidoy Jr. and Gerald Cavan who placed second and third place, respectively. Tidoy got P1,000 while Cavan settled for P500.
NM Alex Lupian (5.5) was fourth while Panabo's NM Cedric Magno (5.0) came fifth to receive P250 each. Finishing behind were Rodrigo Catayas, Brene Parreño, Ronnel Alsado, Jerwell Andoy, Samuel Yu, Reynaldo Quiñonez, Harrison Maamo, Junrie Salubre, Boris Diez, Henry Lopez, Chito Dimakiling II, Sherwin Orbeta, Adrian Dimakiling, Eric Fernandez, Arace Quiñonez, Ruel Cañaveras, Carlo Doctolero, Jefrey de Castro, Jay Roque Sombilon, Kenneth Dilicencia, Ademar Toleran, Jr. and Rowelyn Joy Acedo.
Cañaveras was the best kiddie performer while Parreño was named the best junior and Acedo was the best female chesser. Lawyer Bernie Cataluña took the best professional award while Romy Alvarez was the best senior citizen. The special awardees each got P200.
NCFP regional director James Infiesto said the event was organized in honor of IM Oliver Dimakiling who earned his title on June 2 while competing in the World Chess Olympiad in Turin, Italy.
