'Pirates' leads new releases this week

"PIRATES Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, the current biggest Hollywood movie, leads the list of movies, which opened Wednesday at Gaisano Mall Cinema.

Also, expecting to take the ticket share is the locally made I Wanna Be Happy featuring Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition winner Keana Reeves and the unusual love-team of veteran players Eddie Garcia and Gloria Romero.

Spain's biggest horror flick, The Nun, also joins in the race.

Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest After three years of absence, Captain Jack (Johnny Depp who was nominated in the Oscar for his role in the first installment) and his gang are back to stir the box-office by breaking several records.

Just released in America last Friday, the movie currently hold the records for the biggest first-day opening gross ($55.5 million), the fastest movie to pass the $100M mark (just in its second day), and the biggest three-day weekend earning ($134 million).

Captain Jack Sparrow discovers he owes a blood debt to the legendary Davey Jones, Captain of the ghostly Flying Dutchman. With time running out, Jack must find a way out of his debt or else be doomed to eternal damnation and servitude in the afterlife.

Making matters worse, Sparrow's problems manage to interfere with the wedding plans of a certain Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), who are forced to join Jack on yet another one of his misadventures.

A complicated plot involving a mysterious key and Will's seafood-wearing dad fights for space between relentless action sequences in a film so overloaded with giant sea monster, voodoo princess, desert island, angry cannibals, black spot, peg leg, buried treasure, ghost ship.

I Wanna Be Happy. They were contemporaries at Sampaguita Pictures since the 60s' and did a few movies together, but Gloria Romero and Eddie Garcia never played each other love interest.

But in this latest Seiko Films offering, Gloria and Eddie are the love team to beat. The two play a couple who undergo a midlife crisis of sorts when the wife packs her bags and walks out on her husband after 50 years of marriage, telling her grown-up children she is doing it because "I wanna be happy."

The heartwarming movie, one the best among the very few films 2006 has to offer, got a B rating from the Cinema Evaluation Board. An ensemble comedy written and directed by Jose Javier Reyes, the movie also stars Cherry Pie Picache, Joey Marquez and Diana Zubiri, Marissa Delgado, and Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition Big Winner Keanna Reeves.

The Nun. Spanish favorite horror flick The Nun tells about a ghoul dressed up in a nun garb who goes around killing ex-convent girls.

Years ago, a cruel nun turned boarding school into a living hell for her students, until she mysteriously disappeared. Now the alumnae are being brutally murdered one by one.

There seemed to be some sort of conspiracy involved, as the daughter of one of the victims, Eva, goes on to discover, with the help of a few good friends. So as the body count increases, it's a race against time for our emotionally scarred heroine to uncover the truth and save the day.
