Pacman is new king By Charles Raymond A. Maxey
FILIPINO boxing sensation Manny Pacquiao has added another feather in his cap when he was named the best pound for pound fighter in the world by the World Boxing Media.
Pacquiao, the 27-year-old punching machine from General Santos City, was voted as the number one by the WBM Pro Boxing Poll, dislodging Floyd Mayweather Jr. at the top. Mayweather fell to No. 2 while Winky Wright remained ranked third.
The objective of the WBM Pro Boxing Poll is to recognize the achievements of deserving professional boxers by giving voice to boxing journalists around the world.
The WBM has over forty voting members from the United States, Canada, England, Ireland, Italy, Panama, Australia and New Zealand.
Pacquiao has no legitimate world title, but he rose to the top as a result possibly because of his willingness to face quality opponents.
Only last July 2, Pacquiao scored a unanimous 12-round decision win over Oscar Larios, a former world champion.
In that fight held at the historic Araneta Coliseum, Pacquiao decked Larios twice and turned his rival's face into a bloody mess with his relentless two-fisted attack right from the opening bell.
The Filipino fighter had also beat great Mexican opponents Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales on stoppages. He also fought and drew with featherweight king Juan Manuel Marquez, another Mexican rival. His date with Morales on November 18 in Las Vegas is actually Pacquiao's third with the Mexican. Morales defeated Pacquiao the first time they met.
