Ledesma: Is 'withdrawal' a sin or crime? By Jun Ledesma Sunbursts
"WITHDRAWAL", for as long as it is confined in the realm of family planning, is not a palpable offense. But it is, if the bishops like the Rev. Bacani, has their say. In politics however, "withdrawal of support" is an offense that is actionable in court especially if the motive is to overthrow a sitting president.
The blabbering Roy Seneres claims it is not a crime to withdraw support but he is not talking here of support as in financial support clandestinely given to a college coed by some dirty old men. He is talking of a sinister plot to cripple the leadership of President Arroyo and then to set up what appears now as a civilian-military junta.
In his case, and that of Gen. Danilo Lim, that withdrawal of support comprehends of the violent overthrow, and if necessary, pit our soldiers and police forces with the rest of those in opposing political spectrum, into what could be a bloody civil strife.
Some quarters are still smarting from the leaking of the videotape to media, most specifically to ABS-CBN's "Bandila", alleged it was of dubious intention. Sen. Pong Biazon, for one, wants it investigated as though the surreptitious disclosure of the damning video was more criminal that Lim's announcement of withdrawal of support. Well, Biazon who is an adopted son of Davao, can tell that to the Marines.
In the case of Gen. Lim, his claim that his unaired videotape even helped the government unearth the Magdalo conspiracy is one for the Ripley's. It's like thanking Ferdinand Marcos for being a dictator so that the country will have a president like Cory Aquino.
In that videotape he overtly declared his withdrawal of support for his commander in chief, which happens to be the President of the Philippines. Lim wants to impress us that his action does not tantamount to plotting a coup. Roy for his part wants us to believe that he is not supporting a coup plot even as he publicly admitted in so many words and TV appearances and undiminished hubris that he has in fact goaded Lim to withdraw his support for GMA.
Well, it is to the misfortune of Lim and Seneres that AFP Chief Gen. Generoso Senga and PA Commanding General Esperon did not buy their script. Lim was promptly placed under house arrest, his troops failed to move out of their headquarters, his officers' angry call to the people to help them mount another Edsa did not stir the masa.
Only the usual opposition characters, an aging vice president, and ex-president, who thinks she is Joan of Arc incarnate, were there. The rest of the conspirators where aghast to discover the truth that despite the noise and the hate campaign that they mounted to bring their quarry down to their knees and out of Malacañang the people do not want to have anything to do with their plot to grab power and fantasy to rule.
Despite what had been unearthed and shown to unexpurgated TV footages, the anti-Arroyo forces have not given up. In another vain attempt to hammer a wedge in the military leadership Gen. Senga is being assailed for having allegedly supported the plot of Gen. Lim.
This despite Senga's decisive action to arrest Lim and isolate him from the Rangers. Whatever black propaganda they do now, the hard pieces of evidence gathered against the coup plotters and their civilian con-conspirators will surely bring some adventures to the gallows. Let's see how intrepid is GMA.
