Bank, trade dep't to hold microfinance forum

WITH the difficulties being experienced by small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in accessing funding support from banks, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Southern Mindanao and Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) are holding a one-day microfinance forum for free.

The activity, tagged as "Regional Microfinance Information Campaign" is slated on July 27, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Davao Convention and Trade Center (Davcon) on F. Torres Street, Davao City.

It carries the theme "Sa Microfinance, Aaangat ang Kabuhayan, Aasenso ang Bayan."

The information campaign aims to increase the awareness, understanding, and appreciation of microfinance services among the so-called entrepreneurial poor.

It will provide the participants with information on where and how they can access microfinance services.

BSP officials from Manila and from various rural banks will be the guest speakers during the forum.

After the program proper, a one-on-one consultation with the government financial institutions (GFIs) and microfinance institutions (MFIs) will be made.

DTI regional director for Southern Mindanao Merly M. Cruz urged SMEs and those who want to go into business but are not financially-capable to participate.

"Representatives of GFIs and MFIs are coming over to discuss with them the various financing windows that they can avail of and how they can benefit from those. Through this way, they will have exact information as to whom to talk to whenever they need financial assistance," she said.

Cruz added that as more individuals get into business, the goal of achieving utmost local economic growth becomes more vibrant.
