Davao business leaders support industry clusters

BUSINESS leaders of Davao City are calling on the business community to support the launching of the industry clusters that will spur economic growth in the region.

In a resolution passed during the 6th Davao City Business Conference, lawyer Bienvenido D. Cariaga, president of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCCII) said that while the government through the Regional Development Council-Southern Mindanao is empowering the industry clusters, it is just right to support it.

Cariaga said the government is working out on industry clusters for strategies to achieve direct results.

The Department of Trade and Industry and the Davao City Business Community and leaders of the development council are pushing for the promotion and development of the eight industry clusters, he said.

He also said that included in the resolution is a strong push for the Poultry and Livestock Industry to spur economic growth in the region.

The industry cluster group includes, banana, mango, coconut, seaweed, wood, ecotourism, mining and information community and technology (ICT).

Relative to soliciting support from the business community on the industry cluster, the DCCCII has called on local government and other government agencies to promote transparency in various government transactions.

Cariaga said transparency in government transactions will encourage active participation of all sectors in the process of governance and development.

He said the DTI has piloted the institutionalization of the National Economic Research and Business Assistance Center to facilitate the processing of business registrations, including all necessary permits from the other government agencies.

"The business community, he said, still lacks vital information with regard to the availment of different government services as well as procedures in transacting with various government agencies," he said.

He called on the Davao City government and other government agencies to partner with the local business community to organize series of information dissemination campaigns to explain the various processes of transacting with the government agencies.

Cariaga said a pool of credible resource persons must be developed to conduct the info campaign.
