A concert for a cause By Ana Felicia Dulay
THE Himig Gospel Singers is composed of 12 choir members. But their voices reverberated across the Grand Ballroom of the Davao Convention and Trade Center along F. Torres Street, Davao City in a dinner-concert on Friday.
With a powerful blend of altos, sopranos and tenor, (I am not well-versed in music, with my voice as flat as a mattress) the choir rendered heart-warming songs in praise of God, the Almighty. The choir was conducted by Alvin Aviola.
The dinner and concert, hosted by the United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCCP), was to raise funds for the construction of a new church sanctuary. UCCP will replace the old structure, which dates back 50 years, with a bigger and more spacious building to accommodate the growing number of the congregation.
Among those who present during the occasion were: Sasi Lacquias, a representative from the office of House Representative Cynthia Villar, City Councilor Diosdado Mahipus, who gave an acknowledgment speech; Executive Pastor Mariano Apilado, who gave words of welcome; Associate Pastor Noel Villalba, leading the invocation and; Associate Pastor Oliver Paraiso who led the benediction.
The new church building is expected to be completed in time for the UCCCP's centennial celebration in July 2008.
Aside from the regular worship services on Sundays, mid-week prayer meeting on Wednesdays, in-house ministries and programs, the UCCP church is also engaged in health, educational and social services to the community through the Pag-ugmad Sa Kabataan, Inc.,
UCCCP Social Concerns Foundation Inc., Brokenshire Integrated Health Ministries Inc., Brokenshire College, UCCCP Paaralang Pag-asa, etc.
