Army: 2 Moro rebel groups fight over turf, 'zakat' By Ben O. Tesiorna
TWO factions of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) have been fighting in Maguindanao since Saturday over what the military claim was "overlapping of turf and zakat collection."
Reports from the military stated that MILF forces under Kumander Silongan encountered the group of Kumander Sinsuat at the boundary of barangays Katibpuan and Muslim in Guindulongan, Maguindanao.
In a telephone interview, MILF spokesman Eid Kabalu however denied that the reason for the clash was due to zakat collection.
Zakat is likened to a tax that a Muslim believer has to pay to the community for the properties he owns.
"Walang authority ang MILF to collect zakat," Kabalu said. (The MILF has no authority to collect zakat)
He said the reason for the fighting between the two MILF groups is due to a family vendetta or rido.
Kabalu said the fight already stopped Monday after the MILF central committee intervened and ordered the two groups to stop the fighting.
He added that the residents displaced by the clash had started returning to their homes as of Monday.
