N. Cotabato village chief shot
A BARANGAY captain of Carmen, North Cotabato was shot by unknown assailants in Kabacan on Thursday.
The victim was identified as Eddie Saberola, barangay captain of Liliongan, Carmen. He is also vice chairman of the town's Association of Barangay Captains.
He was shot near a drugstore along the Cotabato-Davao National Highway.
Saberola is now recuperating at a hospital in Kidapawan City.
Police investigators still have no suspects in the killing.
Saberola is allegedly involved in the attack of Moro farmers in his village by government paramilitary forces on April 14 that resulted in several casualties on both sides.
Moro Islamic Liberation Front's official website Luwaran.com identified Carmen as one of the early scenes of massacre of Moros that captured national and even international attention prompting the Organization of the Islamic Conference to send a fact-finding mission to Mindanao in January 1972.
This was the Manili Massacre on June 19, 1971, where 70 Muslims, including women and children were massacred inside a mosque in Manili, Carmen, North Cotabato.
The killers were members of the Christian so-called fanatic organization, the Ilagas who were aided actively by members of the defunct Philippine Constabulary. (BOT)
