By Rex C. Otero

A TOTAL of 12 houses and a portion of a madrasah were burned down in a fire at the old Toril public market in Toril, Davao City Sunday morning.

Fire Officer 3 Joefel Lape of the Davao Central Fire Office said the 12 houses burned were owned by Amir Tampugao, Mansawi Maba, Solaiman Mama-alim, Anwar Mama-alim, Tungko Turuson, Solaiman Macaampao, Akmad Ampoan, Mohammed Saripada, Hamil Macapato, Palawan Asis, Pata Abdurakman and Macmo Sulayba.

"Aside from the homeowners of the 12 houses, there were five other families who were merely renting," Lape said based on a report submitted to the Toril Fire Station.

Lape added that the Islamic School of Guidance was partially damaged.

More than 20 families were affected as some of the houses hosted more than one family.

He said the overall estimated damage is at least P3.5 million.

According to initial investigation, the fire started at around 6:25 a.m. at the house of Tampugao, which quickly spread to the next house.

Fire Inspector Vic Ryan Cubero declared the blaze under control at around 7:35 a.m. The fire was totally put out by 8:02 a.m.

Based on initial findings, the cause of the fire was an electrical short circuit. Fire investigators though are still conducting further investigation.

Lape said that though the victims were not able to save their belongings, no one died or was hurt in the incident.

The victims are temporarily housed at the Toril gym while others are staying with their relatives.
