AusAid vows to double assistance to Mindanao By Barbara Carl R. Quiero
THE top official of the Basic Education Assistance for Mindanao (Beam) project said they are considering doubling the $36 million in assistance to the island in the next two years to strengthen the implementation of the project.
Beam Australian project director Ian D'Arcy Walsh said the Philippines is their largest beneficiary, extending $36 million in yearly assistance to the country for the implementation of the Beam project.
Beam, which started in January 2002, is a six and a half year project of the AusAID and the government through the Department of Education (DepEd), which aims to strengthen basic education in Southern and Central Mindanao.
"We are planning to double the financial support in the next two years and there's also a prospect to extend financial support beyond 2008," Walsh said during the Ugnayan sa Royal Mandaya on Wednesday.
Davao City schools division superintendent Gloria Labor said the idea is very much welcome as it would make quality education available to far-flung areas in Mindanao through the Beam's access program.
DepEd assistant regional director Luz S. Almeda said the access program responds to the needs of school children in Mindanao's tri-people -- the Muslims, Lumads and the migrants.
"Migrants are those Visayans, Tagalog or Ilonggo who are now residing in Mindanao," Almeda said during the same press conference.
Since 2002, Cotabato Australian project coordinator Ramon Bobier said Beam has able to establish 126 learning centers in Regions 11, 12 and in the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (Armm).
