City police to meet gun dealers for mayor's exec order
THE Davao City Police Office (DCPO) is set to meet owners of gun shops and shooting ranges to discuss Executive Order 12 issued by Mayor Rodrigo Duterte strictly regulating the sale of high-powered firearms in the city.
DCPO director Catalino Cuy said they will discuss with the more than 20 identified gun dealers in the city how to effectively implement EO 12.
Cuy admitted that before EO 12, the police have virtually no role in regulating the sale of firearms within the city.
But with EO 12, DCPO is mandated by the City Government to issue the clearance that would serve as basis for an individual or groups to be able to purchase rifles higher than .22 caliber or ammunition exceeding 50 rounds.
Cuy said EO 12 is a welcome development, admitting that prior the mayor's order, any moneyed individual can buy high powered firearms in any gun stores in the city without much difficulty.
In EO 12 dated August 2, Duterte ordered the regulation in selling, acquisition or disposition of all rifles higher than .22 caliber, including accessories that enhance the same like rifle and optical scopes and also the regulation of shotguns of whatever gauge and ammunitions and cartridges in excess of 50 rounds.
Duterte explained that the order does not ban the sale of high-powered guns within the city, saying his objective is simply to know who are the buyers of these guns.
EO 12 took effect last August 2. (BOT)
