Councilor accuses agency of indifference

COUNCILOR Danilo C. Dayanghirang has a mouthful to say against the National Economic Development Authority (Neda) after an invitation for the Neda secretary was passed on from one department to another at the Neda central office in Manila.

Dayanghirang, who is the convention director of the Philippine Councilors League 6th Mindanao Island Congress to be held in Davao City this August 10 to 12, said he has invited Neda secretary Romulo L. Neri as guest speaker for the event.

"Pinagpasapasahan kami," Dayanghirang said, adding that this just reflects Neda's indifference to Mindanao.

He said they were informed that Neri could not grace the event and their invitation was channeled to the office of the Deputy Director General Agosto Santos.

However, they were again told that Santos is unlikely to join the event and was thus asked "as to the level of the speaker they need" as Neda will look for another speaker.

"Siyempre, we want the secretary himself," he said.

After the seemingly unwillingness of Neda central office to accommodate their request, Dayanghiranng said, he personally went to the Neda regional office to show the importance of the participation of Neri.

He said they were asked for the subject to be discussed by Neda of which they immediately replied through fax.

He added that they had also difficulty getting the cellphone numbers of the people from the Neda regional office.

"Given these, it is apparent that we are having a hard time getting a confirmation from Neda. It is unfortunate that things like this happen where pubic officers are hardly accessible. We cannot help but sense the indifference of Neda to Mindanao," Dayanghirang said in his letter.

Dayanghirang said that it was only after he wrote a complaint letter addressed to Neri dated July 31, regarding the "indifference of Neda to Mindanao" that Neri accepted the invitation.

However, Dayanghirang said they have decided to drop the Neda from the list of invited guest speakers because they have deadlines to follow to print their program.

Instead, he said they invited Commission on Election Commissioner Benjamin Abalos, who immediately responded positively to the invitation.

Sun.Star tried to contact Neda regional director Angelo J. Agustin for comments but was told that he is on leave while assistant regional director Bonifacio Uy was attending a meeting. (BRQ)
