Hiyas organizers vow a very safe pageant

ORGANIZERS of the Hiyas ng Kadayawan are taking extra precautionary measures in the coming 2006 Hiyas ng Kadayawan Search this month following the freak accident that killed a school beauty search contestant.

Hiyas committee chair Oscar Casaysay said he has been telling their participants not to use fire or gas as props during the pageant to avoid similar incident that happened at the University of Southeastern Philippines (Usep).

A student of Usep died after her costume made up of cotton and plastic caught fire as she passed by a candle placed along the stage ramp.

"As organizers, we have become more vigilant, aside from making sure that the women code is implemented we also have to look primarily into the security of the candidates and it was unfortunate and we are saddened by the incident at Usep," Casaysay said at the I-Speak press conference Thursday.

But, Casaysay said, it has been the protocol of the city to have medic teams on hand during pageants.

"Ever since, a 911 team is on standby whether Hiyas or Mutya contest," Casaysay said.

Casaysay said even in the Indak-Indak sa Kadayawan contest, they have been discouraging the wearing of paints by the participants as it covers the participant's pores on the skin, suppressing the person to sweat, which is unhealthy. (BRQ)
