Slay raps already filed v. 'killer-cop' By Rhodamae M. Hernandez
THE policeman accused of killing another policeman stands to spend his retirement years in prison as well as lose his benefits as a law enforcement officer pending the trials for the criminal cases filed against him.
San Pedro Police filed Thursday criminal and administrative charges against SPO1 Napoleon Barrientos.
Barrientos, 50, has reportedly refused to undergo a paraffin test to show whether he fired a gun recently.
At the same time, administrative charges were filed against Barrientos before the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) Internal Affairs and Services. In this case, the hearing officer will be given the discretion of whether to forfeit the benefits being enjoyed by Barrientos as a policeman pending his trial.
PO2 Raul Lucas, investigator of the case, told Sun.Star Davao that the handgun of the suspect has already been submitted for gunpowder and ballistic examinations.
"The test results are needed to show to the court whether the suspect's gun was used," Lucas said.
Barrientos was tagged as the suspect in the shooting to death of SPO2 Melane Mon, homicide investigator of the San Pedro police station and resident of NHA Subdivision in Bangkal.
Barrientos is assigned at the Community Police Outpost near Marco Polo Hotel and resides in sitio Bagong Buhay in Agdao.
The shooting occurred while the two were having a heated argument outside Fly-over Ihaw-Ihaw just across Victoria Plaza Mall at around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Barrientos allegedly entered Fly-over Ihaw-ihaw with two companions and that he refused to deposit his firearm when requested by the security guard.
The owner of the establishment upon learning such called up Mon, who was a friend of the eatery owner.
Barrientos reportedly continued to refuse to hand over his firearm when Mon requested him to do so, resulting in a heated argument.
The argument ended in a scuffle. Barrientos fired his gun at the victim, hitting Mon twice on his chest and once on the head.
Mon was pronounced dead on arrival at the San Pedro Hospital.
Barrientos was then arrested by responding members of the San Pedro Police Station. His two other companions fled after the incident.
The suspect is now detained at the San Pedro Police Station.
Moonlighting
DCPO denied rumors that Mon was moonlighting as a security personnel of Ihaw-ihaw.
When Mon was killed, talks were rife that he was actually a security personnel of the restaurant.
DCPO director Catalino Cuy said Mon just happens to be a close friend of the owner of the establishment and thus has been frequenting the place.
But Cuy said that even if Mon was indeed moonlighting as security officer, the DCPO sees nothing wrong with it for as long as it was done outside duty hours.
"But, in fairness to Mon, the talks that he was moonlighting are not true. The owner was only his friend that is why he is being called if there is trouble there," Cuy said. (With reports from BOT)
