Mine firm might be booted out of D. Oriental
THE Heritage Resources Development Corporation (HRDC) may end up booted after displeasing local government units for not paying taxes.
HRDC is the mining company who has sought government help to drive away members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) who allegedly encamped in their mining site in Banaybanay, Davao Oriental since July 21.
Unconfirmed reports reaching Sun.Star showed that Banaybanay Mayor Pete Mejos scolded HRDC officials for non-payment of their financial obligations to the community.
Davao Oriental Governor Ma. Elena Palma Gil was also reportedly angry at HRDC, after its check issued to the Provincial Government bounced. The check was said to be for the mining firm's tax obligation to the province.
As a result, the local government is planning to declare the mining company as "non grata" (unwelcome) in the province and its business permit rescinded.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources meanwhile issued a stoppage order against HRDC operation.
Even the military officials in the area were said to be pissed off with HRDC as well for accusing them of not doing anything to protect the HRDC interest in the area.
MILF spokesman Eid Kabalu said their men are still in the area and will not vacate it until HRDC pays their obligations to the community.
Kabalu claims HRDC owes the community some P10 million. (BOT)
