'Sayaw Mindanaw' features best of Mindanao dances

THE finest dance troupes from all over Mindanao competed in this year's Sayaw Mindanao, the 8th Mindanao Indigenous Peoples Dance Festival, with preliminaries, which kicked off Tuesday until Wednesday and finals on Friday at 7 p.m. at the SM City Davao Entertainment Plaza.

Sayaw Mindanao is a theatrical tribal suites of dances and music depicting Mindanao indigenous epics, folklores and traditions rendered by Davao and Mindanao's many arts and culture ensembles.

The following groups competed in the following categories:

Davao City based Junior category: Osmeña Elementary School Dance Ensemble, Bolton Elementary School Dance Troupe, Matina Central Elementary School Dance Troupe, F. Bustamante Elementary School Dance Troupe, Bucana Elementary School, San Isidro Elementary School Dance Troupe, Maa Central Elementary School, Sta. Ana Central Elementary School DT, SOS Dance Troupe and Tinubdan Cultural Dance Ensemble.

Davao City-based Senior Category: Madayaw Dance Ensemble, agallanes Elementary School Dance Troupe, Mindanao Dance Ensemble, Pangkat Silayan Theater Collective, Teatro Mabalian, Maa National High School, Kalumon Performing Ensemble, Tapok Tambara, Emmanuel Learning School, Talinao Dance Ensemble, Tigato Kalagan Dance Troupe and Sining Kayumanggi; Out-of-Town Junior Category: Sikat T'boli (South Cotabato) and Maguindanao Cultural Dance Troupe (Maguindanao).

Out-of-Town Senior Category: Lake Sebu National High School Dance Troupe (Lake Sebu, South Cotabato), Actor's Quarter (Butuan City), Tatak Pilipino (Mati, Davao Oriental), Kabilin Cultural Troupe (Malita, Davao del Sur), Helobung (Lake Sebu, South Cotabato), Salaminsayaw Dance Troupe (Misamis Oriental), Medal Kolon D'atal Dance Troupe (Koronadal, South Cotabato), DNSCST Dance Troupe (Panabo City), Highlander Karegan Ensemble (Malalag, Davao del Sur) and Fatima High School Dance Theater Performing Arts (General Santos City.)

The criteria for the contest are: Choreography and Creativity (35 percent), Execution (35 percent), Research Material (10 percent), Costumes and Props (10 percent), and Music (20 percent), Prizes for the Senior Category are: first prize-P60,000 plus trophy, second prize-P40,000 plus trophy, third prize-P30,000 plus trophy, citation prizes (four)-15,000 each plus plaque. For the Junior Category: first prize-P40,000 plus trophy, second prize-P30,000 plus trophy, third prize-P20,000 plus trophy, citation prizes (two)-P10,000 each plus plaque.
