Batucan, Engay are chess champs
HIGHLY-touted John Ray Batucan and Danilo Engay lived up to their billings to annex the boys 10-under and 14-under titles of the just-concluded Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte Kadayawan Age-Group Chess Tournament at the Gaisano Mall of Davao.
Batucan, a national age-group chess meet medalist, grabbed perfect 5.0 points as 4.0 scorers Patrick Aquino, Jayson Engay and Literatus placed second, third and fourth, respectively.
Engay was also unbeaten in the five-round Swiss System format tournament presented by Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte through the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office.
Neptuli Batucan, Rolindo Bolasa and Lucky Leo Aton took the next three spots.
The boys 12-under crown went to Clark Kent Anabieza while Josev Omar Aquino was second, Winston Edulantes third, Bryan Paca¤a fourth and Charrie Espinosa fifth.
Joerlz Gimony ruled the girls eight-under, besting Ella Grace Moulic and Precious Joy Bayron while Dawn Grace Pacana topped the girls 12-under event over Erna Liwanan and Nicole Ann Diez.
In girls 14-under category, Mary Israel Palero beat Lovely Engay and Quennie Gabayan for the plum.
Cash prizes and medals were awarded to the winners of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP)-sanctioned meet. (MLSA)
