Army's Eastern Command activated here next week

THE Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) will formally deactivate the Southern Command (Southcom) based in Zamboanga City next week and activate the Eastern and Western commands with the Eastern Command based in Davao City.

Upon the order of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Southcom is divided into two with the purpose of improving the mobilization and management of troops in Mindanao especially so with the AFP's all-out-war policy against the New People's Army and terrorist groups.

Southcom, the largest military command, has under its jurisdiction three Army divisions, two Navy commands, two Marine Brigades, and an Air Force tactical wing.

The Eastern Command will be headed by Major General Obaniana who is presently the Army's 6th Infantry Division commander.

The ceremony for the formal activation of the Eastern Command will be on August 29. The command will have the Southern Philippines Development Authority complex as its temporary base.

The AFP is said to be eyeing the old Davao International Airport as the Eastern Command's main headquarter. (BOT)
