Tagaytay out to defend title By Charles Raymond A. Maxey
TAGAYTAY is out to defend its title when the 2006 National Inter-Cities and Municipalities Chess Team Championship fires off September 13 to 17 at the Gaisano Mall Atrium in Davao City.
James Infiesto, National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) 11 regional director, said Tagaytay will be headed by Grandmaster Rogelio Antonio Jr. and Fide Master Wesley So.
Muntinlupa is also coming over to see action and give Tagaytay a run for its money. Leading the team will be Grandmaster Nelson Mariano and International Master Oliver Dimakiling.
Infiesto, guesting at Thursday's Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn, said a total of 70 teams are seeing action in the five-day event sanctioned by the NCFP.
Davao City will be fielding two teams, according to Infiesto.
Engineer Allan Diez, NCFP chairman on grassroots development, said the Davao team will be made of old guards and young Turks and should provide stiff competition to the rest of the field.
The composition of the two Davao teams will be known after two qualifying tournaments to be held starting with the first from August 26 and 27.
Infiesto said NCFP president Prospero "Butch" Pichay will grace the opening rites on September 13.
Some P305,000 worth of prizes is at stake in the tournament, with the champion team getting P100,000 plus trophy and medals.
